Wet–dry cycles influence methylmercury concentrations in water in seasonal prairie wetland ponds

چکیده
Methylmercury concentrations [MeHg] in whole water were measured 28 prairie wetland ponds central Saskatchewan between 2006 and 2012. Ponds fell into four land use categories (established grass, recent traditional cultivated, certified organic cultivated) two level patterns (“Mainly Wet” stayed wet at least until October “Mainly Dry” dried up each summer). Despite similar atmospheric Hg deposition, average proportion of total that was MeHg (%MeHg) higher from surrounded with established grass or farming; this trend may be driven by high one Organic site. A stronger relationship observed patterns. Average %MeHg significantly Mainly Wet compared to Dry ponds. Higher correlated much dissolved carbon (DOC) sulfate (SO 4 −2 ) specific UV absorbance DOC. We suggest not fit the accepted paradigm wetlands [SO ] show inhibition methylation. Our work suggests controls such as chemical nature DOC redox fluctuations hydrologically dynamic systems important determining net these sites.

Mercury methylation in high and low-sulphate impacted wetland ponds within the prairie pothole region of North America.
Using enriched stable (201)Hg injections into intact sediment cores, we provide the first reported Hg methylation potential rate constants (km) in prairie wetland ponds (0.016-0.17 d(-1)). Our km values were similar to other freshwater wetlands and did not differ in ponds categorized with high compared to low surface water concentrations of sulphate. Sites with high sulphate had higher proporti...

The Conceptual Wetland Mitigation Plan for Phase II expansion to the John J. Briscoe Reservoir (Briscoe Reservoir) near Monroe, Georgia uses innovative approaches to restoring palustrine wetland functions to existing lacustrine habitats. This paper presents strategies for the design of forested and scrub-shrub wetland habitats in former wastewater treatment ponds and wetland design approach and...
متن کاملMethylmercury formation in a wetland mesocosm amended with sulfate.
This study used an experimental model to evaluate methylmercury accumulation when the soil of a constructed wetland is amended with sulfate. The model was planted with Schoenoplectus californicus and designed to reduce wastestream metals and metal-related toxicity. The soil was varied during construction to provide a control and two sulfate treatments which were equally efficient at overall mer...
متن کاملSulfate addition increases methylmercury production in an experimental wetland.
Atmospheric mercury is the dominant Hg source to fish in northern Minnesota and elsewhere. However, atmospherically derived Hg must be methylated prior to accumulating in fish. Sulfate-reducing bacteria are thought to be the primary methylators of Hg in the environment. Previous laboratory and field mesocosm studies have demonstrated an increase in methylmercury (MeHg) levels in sediment and pe...
متن کاملSeasonal Variations of Lead and Chromium Concentrations in the Water Samples From Yamuna River in Delhi, India
Background: According to Hindu mythology, Yamuna River plays an impotent role as a holy water resource in Delhi, India. The lead and chromium concentrations were determined from the water samples collected from five different locations around this river in Delhi area. The contaminated water from this river is mostly used for drinking, agriculture, aquaculture, and storage as a holy water. Meth...
